Crappy/Cool Pedal Alert!

Last time around I expressed my undying love for the Nady DS50 Big Muff clone. It may have looked as if it was modeled after a 3rd grader's drawing of a foot, but it sounded like Rams Head heaven.
So this time around I would like to introduce you to my latest find: the Ibanez Soundtank series FZ5 "60s Fuzz". Its a Big Muff with midrange in an enclosure that is one step above a Silly Putty egg.
I'm smitten.
And just like the Nady DS50, it is destined to appear on the upcoming Heads recordings.
Boutique pedals are for chumps. Soundtank fuzz is where its at, baby!
One last thing: I almost forgot to show you the amp I bought today that I'm gonna use for some fuzzy leads and what not:
Its a 1954 Supro 1604. One knob. Cute as a button and ready for fuzz!

Over and Way Out,

John

The Continuing Adventures of Being A Head

Work continues on the upcoming Heads album. Guitars are piling up like its going out of style. Phasers, echoplex, backwards guitar, forwards guitar, mellotrons, E Bow and even some deliberate iPhone interference. If it makes a noise, its going on the record.
And speaking of noise, I just got my hands on two more weapons of mass audio destruction to add to the mix.
First one is a Korg X911 guitar synth circa 1981. Makes your guitar sound like C3PO being raped by a fax machine. Thanks to Mark Murphy for letting me borrow this utterly useless hunk of guitar wrecking pleasure.

Second one is the Nady DS50 Distortion Sustainer.
Its a Big Muff. Only better. More bottom end than a vintage Rams Head, more sizzle than a Civil War era Muff AND its available at Sears and Target for the cost of a bag of reefer. Best Big Muff I've played since the Op Amp version I used in Monster Magnet. And check out just how ugly this thing is!

You know you want one.

Evil Acidhead News

Test pressings are on the horizon for the upcoming CD/LP release of the complete Evil Acidhead recordings tentatively titled, "In The Name Of All That Is Unholy". I went back to the original cassette masters and transferred them at 24/96. And the masters were in pretty good shape. You gotta love cassettes.
No brickwall limiting, eq or noise reduction was used on these tapes. Its a warts and all affair. Drop out, tape folds and hiss were left as is. Remember that we're talking about 4 track cassette technology, noisy Casio SK-1 samples, and deliberate walls of noise and static, so trying to make a "modern" remaster would have been pointless. It is what it is. Just like the original low bias tape. Only louder.
More news to follow.

Creepyfingers Fuzz Heaven

The recording for the upcoming album by The Heads has begun.
And here is the fuzzbox that I will be using:

I shit you not when I tell you that this Creepyfingers creation is the finest fuzzbox I have ever heard.
Brad Davis is a pedal makin' wizard!
The design is based on a Schaller fuzz. But Brad has added his Creepyfingers magic to the mix and transformed this thing into a multi-dimensional acid rock weapon of mass destruction.
And look at that meticulous construction!
Oh yeah, he also informed me that the last one that he made was for none other than Dungen's Reine Fiske, the only guitarist out there that hits all of the right notes for me.

That sealed the deal for me.
Search for the perfect fuzz is over.
Give Brad all of your money.
